Markus Berli, Ph.D., Associate Research Professor for Environmental Hydrogeophysics at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) in Las Vegas, NV. Dr. Berli has experience in basic and applied research related to the physics, mechanics and hydraulics of soils and soft rocks. His research projects encompass a range of topics from the mechanics and hydraulics of root-soil interactions, water and energy balance of arid soils to prediction of post-fire flooding and debris flow. His research has been funded by US-NSF, USDA, DOD, DOE and the Swiss National Science Foundation. Dr. Berli leads the NSF-EPSCoR-funded project “Scaling Environmental Processes in Heterogeneous Arid Soils” (SEPHAS; http://www.dri.edu/sephas). He is also a Co-Principal Investigator on the current NSF-EPSCoR RII Track 1 project “The Solar Energy-Water-Environment Nexus in Nevada” (http://solarnexus.epscorspo.nevada.edu/). Since fall 2012, he serves as Acting Co-Director of DRI’s Clean Technology and Renewable Energy Center (CTREC; http://www.dri.edu/ctrec). Dr. Berli holds a M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), Switzerland.
