Under Professor Ozkan’s guidance, I will be doing research on Optical Purity of common pain killing drugs and the relationship of the effectiveness of these drugs. Several common drugs will be obtained from local convenient stores and compared. The drugs will be ground up and dissolved in appropriate solvents, after which the drugs will be placed into a polarimeter to study the optical purity of the solution. Functional group(s) and their angle rotations will be identified by IR (infrared spectrophotometer). After the identification of the isomers (enantiomers), research will be done to test for the effectiveness, ineffectiveness, and toxicity of the specific molecules.
