Graduate Student Writing for Publications Workshop Series
Presented by the Nevada System Sponsored Programs and EPSCoR through the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Writing Center.
This series of workshops provides graduate students scaffolded instruction about publishing their research. Each workshop begins with work completed during the preceding workshop. Writers will work with their own texts and will leave each workshop having learned and practiced one aspect of writing for publication.
The Ethics of Publication & Ask an Editor - February 10, 2017
Participants in this workshop will learn some of the ethical parameters of publication. We will address issues such as plagiarism, simultaneous submission, IRB permissions, and copyright. Editors from academic journals in the liberal arts, social sciences, and STEM disciplines will offer brief presentations during the first 90 minutes and will be available to answer questions during the final half-hour.
Finding the Right Journal for Your Work - February 17, 2017
Participants in this workshop will learn about using bibliometrics to evaluate journals for publication, including understanding various impact numbers. They will also learn and practice strategies for finding appropriate journals for their work, analyzing journals’ audiences, and understanding journals’ style requirements.
The presentation will take about 90 minutes and will be followed by a practice session during which writers will be able to get informal individual guidance.
Revising for Publication - February 24, 2017
Participants in this workshop will learn and practice strategies for revising their work based on the style requirements of the journal of their choice. The presentation will cover the conventional parts of an academic journal article, including abstract, keywords, introduction, literature review, materials & methods, results, discussion, conclusion), and participants will practice using a variety of strategies for keeping material organized as they revise.
The presentation portion of the workshop will take about 75 minutes, and writers may use the remaining 45 minutes to meet with Writing Center consultants for individual consultations about revision issues.
Editing and Proofreading for Publication - March 3, 2017
Participants will learn and practice strategies for effectively and efficiently editing for clarity, concision, and coherence. Strategies for proofreading and formatting the document to comply with journal requirements for documentation, images, captions, and appendices will also be presented during the first 90 minutes. The remaining time will be used for consultations with Writing Center consultants and practice using the material covered in the workshop.
